Bupp sets Behrend records for saves, doubles
Former Penn State Behrend softball shortstop and pitcher Alexa Bupp has been named the 2017-18 NCAA Division III statistical champion for saves.
The former Warren Area High School standout made 28 appearances in the circle this season for the Lions (32-13) and recorded nine saves, breaking the school record for career saves with 14. She posted a 1.76 ERA in 31 innings pitched while striking out 45 batters. Bupp was a two-time All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference selection and 2017 AMCC Player of the Year. For 2018 she was a second-team choice at shortstop and third-team selection as pitcher.
Bupp tallied 41 hits including 12 doubles to break the program record for career doubles at 46. She drove in 25 and scored 27 runs, playing in all 45 games.
Bupp’s high school success carried over to her collegiate career. At Warren, she went 45-6 with a 0.71 ERA during her four years in the circle. In 307 innings she gave up just 139 hits and walked only 48 while she struck out 467. At the plate she hit .441, scored 55 runs, tallied 23 doubles, seven triples and 14 homeruns and had 72 RBI. The Dragons reached the District 10 title game, played at Behrend, all four seasons and won the championship her senior season in 2014.
