Rocky Grove beats North Catholic, advances to PIAA title game

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – Eisenhower has some company.

By virtue of its 2-1 win over Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic on Monday in the Class 2A semifinals, Rocky Grove becomes the first District 10 baseball team since the Knights in 2015 to advance to a PIAA final.

The Orioles are looking to make District 10 history in the process, as no school from the district has ever won a state title in baseball.

Ace pitcher Travis Perry, a Youngstown state commit, was excellent against the Trojans, Going 6 2/3 shutout inning before being lifted due to pitch count.

North Catholic got one back and had the tying and winning runs on base when senior Tyler Clayton ended the game with a diving catch in right field.

Rocky Grove will play Camp Hill in the title game on Friday at 1 p.m. at Penn State’s Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Trailing 7-6 going into the bottom of the seventh, Mason Gavlick tied the game with an RBI single for the Lions and Quinn Buffington delivered the game-winner one batter later.

Meadville got two on with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but Josh Peters, who relieved Varley because of pitch count, was able to induce a groundout to end it.

Ringgold took the lead in the fourth on Bob Boyer’s 2-run single.

Meadville rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of three Rams’ errors, this after Meadville’s Cole Potase and Ringgold’s Anthony Vavasori were ejected.

With the win, Ringgold will play Valley View, which beat Northwest Lehigh 7-3, in the title game on Thursday.
