Post 135 Junior Legion falls to Wesleyville, 6-2

Post 135 first baseman Ben Berdine runs to first for an out after fielding a ground ball in the first inning of a game against Wesleyville at Legion Field, Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

Wesleyville scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach on its way to a 6-2 Junior Legion win over Post 135 at Legion Field Tuesday.

Post 135 committed a trio of errors in the inning that allowed all three runs to come across.

Wesleyville came into the seventh with a 3-2 lead. Mike Pepicello led off the inning with an infield single. Danny Chilcott was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Post 135 pitcher Ben Berdine looked like he might get out of the inning after he caught Cody Klein looking and got Cam Forcht to fly out. Austin Vaughn and Joey Amann both reached on errors, however, and the miscues allowed Pepicello and Chilcott to score.

Vaughn scored on an apparent miscommunication between Berdine and catcher Ethan Wilson. Vaughn was on third and Amann on first. On the pitch, Amann took off for second. Wilson made a snap throw to Berdine, but Berdine looked like he expected the throw to go to second. The ball ricocheted off Berdine’s glove and Vaughn raced home to put Wesleyville’s sixth run on the board.

Post 135 looked poised for a big first inning. Wilson and Berdine singled and walked to start the inning and Hunter Loomis reached on a fielder’s choice. An error on Loomis’ hit gave Post the bases loaded with no outs.

Wesleyville answered right back in the second. Matthew Dorosch hit a leadoff single and Brandon Perez walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. Pepicello put down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners and Chilcott followed with an infield RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. Klein hit a sacrifice fly to score Perez and put Wesleyville up 2-1.

Wesleyville tacked on another run in the fourth as Collin May walked and Dorosch roped a RBI double to left-center to bring him home and make it 3-1.

Post closed the gap in the sixth. Berdine was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Loomis reached on a fielder’s choice. Dylan Maeder was also hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Zach Rohlin reached on an error and Loomis scored on the play to pull Post to 3-2.
