Youngsville grad Ishman, RMU strike gold at Occoquan Sprints

FAIRFAX STATION, VA. – The Robert Morris University rowing team opened its 2018 spring season March 25 by taking part in the Occoquan Sprints in Fairfax Station, Virginia.

Highlighting the meet for the Colonials was the Novice 8+, which claimed gold with a time of 8:18.39. RMU finished ahead of Virginia Commonwealth (8:47.09), James Madison (9:38.43) and Richmond (10:36.59).

Serving as the coxswain was freshman Emily Kastroll, and she was joined by rookies Rachel Gress, Alison Ishman, a Youngsville High School graduate, and Nicole Kristof, junior Madalyn Trapp and freshmen Mia Krolczyk, Francesca Barchetti, Emma McIntosh and Emma Smith.

Gress, Ishman, McIntosh and freshman Natasha Wood also competed in the Novice 4+ and claimed silver with a time of 9:15.34, trailing only Loyola (Md.) (9:08.58) and ahead of Susquehanna (9:41.74) and James Madison (11:06.37).

Serving as the coxswain for the Novice 4+ was Katelyn DeAgro.

In varsity action, Robert Morris finished second in the Varsity 8+ Petite Final with a time of 8:03.39, trailing only Franklin and Marshall (7:54.00).

“There’s a lot we can take away from the first race of the season,” head coach Nelle Stahura said. “We learned a lot and are walking away with some well-deserved medals in the Novice 8+ event. With such a young team, it’s exciting to see a glimmer of what the future holds for our program.”

The Colonials return to the water Saturday, April 7, by taking part in the Sacred Heart Spring Fling in Shelton, Connecticut.
