Johnson, Dragons earn road victory over St. Marys

Warren pitcher Colby Johnson tossed a complete game, allowing just 3 hits in a 3-1 win at St. Marys on Saturday.

ST. MARYS – The Warren Dragons are capable of winning games in a variety of ways. On Saturday against St. Marys, they did it through pitching and defense.

Senior Colby Johnson tossed a complete game 3-hitter, leading the Dragons to a 3-1 win over a quality St. Marys team at Berwind Park.

Johnson needed just 75 pitches to get through seven innings, striking out one and allowing his defense to make plays behind him.

The Dragons scored all the runs they needed in the first inning.

Derek Knapp and Johnson both reached to start the game via a base hit and an error. Knapp and pinch-runner Ryan Arnold advanced into scoring position via a wild pitch by Tim Beimel, and Austyn Cummings drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly.

Lance Baldensperger followed with a sharp single to center, bringing in Arnold to make it 2-0.

St. Marys struck for the lone blemish off Johnson in the bottom of the first, as Nate Beimel’s sacrifice fly brought in Brandon Sicheri.

The Dragons (3-1) tacked on an insurance run in the fifth, with Cummings’ double bringing in Knapp, who walked with one out.

To say Johnson was in complete command would be an understatement. He didn’t allow a runner to reach scoring position over the final five innings.

Warren is scheduled to host Fort LeBoeuf today in its Region 6 opener, weather permitting.

The JV team was also a winner, 8-2.

James Swanson had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Tyler Gustafson was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Ethan Wilson 1-for-2 with an RBI and Hunter Loomis 1-for-4 with an RBI. Ben Berdine added a double.

On the mound, Gustafson (3 IP), Loomis (3 IP) and Nick Hussey (1 IP) combined to strike out eight and walk two.
