Ike girls sweep Smethport, DCC to open season

SMETHPORT – The Eisenhower girls track and field team started the season off strong, earning a pair of dominating non-region wins over Smethport (109-40) and DuBois Central Catholic (113-38).

The boys, meanwhile, beat DCC 101.5-39.5 and fell to Smethport 93-57.

TerryLee Talasky and Delaney Nizzi helped lead the way. Both teamed with Caroline Smelko and Aleea Giese to win the 4×400 relay, while Talasky swept the 100, 200 and 400 and Nizzi the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, both easily qualifying for districts in all of those events. Nizzi also captured first in the long jump.

Lydia Giannini won both the shut put and discus, as did Currie Hultman in the javelin, narrowly missing qualifying for districts. Also in the field, Smelko won the high jump and Emiley Wheeler the triple jump.

On the track, Giese won the 800 and teamed with Nataly Clark, Lindsay Finch and Tess Morningstar to win the 4×800 relay, while the 4×100 relay of Cameran Edwards, Catrina Edwards, Wheeler and Patricia Bortz also took first.

“It was a good outing for our first meet of the season,” said Eisenhower coach Darlene Beach. “We’re very pleased. All the girls did well and supported each other.”

For the boys, Jonah Samuelson, a returning state qualifier, swept the 110 and 300 hurdles and also ran a leg in the winning 4×100 relay along with Riley West, Nate Holt and Kelly Glotz. Jared Martone took first in the triple jump and long jump, while Glotz won the 100 and 200.

Eisenhower returns to action Tuesday at Union City.
