WCCS drops a pair of close games

ERIE – Warren County Christian School’s boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Erie for the first round of the York-Penn League Tournament Friday.

Both teams had late leads, but ultimately fell to their opponents.

The girls dropped a heartbreaker to Calvary Baptist, 25-23, while the boys were downed by Christian Life Academy 60-54.

The Lady Lions nearly went wire-to-wire with the lead, but couldn’t keep pace with only five players and lost the lead in the final minute.

“We just ran out of steam late,” WCCS coach Tom Jones said. “We played strong defense, it just didn’t go our way.”

The Lady Lions were also hindered by a poor performance at the free throw line, hitting just five of 14 attempts.

“That’s one of the things we knew we needed to do better,” Jones said.

Rachel Brenner had a game-high 13 points.

“Brenner had a strong game,” Jones said.

WCCS will take on Erie Bethel in the consolation game today with tipoff scheduled for 10 a.m.

The boys took an eight point lead into the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold on as CLA pulled away in the final two minutes.

“Our starters went the whole game,” Jones said. “We just got a step slower all around. I have nothing but kudos and praise for them. They played hard.”

CLA used a press defense for the entire game and it wore on the Lions in the final quarter.

“We did well the first three quarters, but it took a toll on us in the fourth,” Jones said. “They just started beating us on the boards and in transition.”

CLA outscored WCCS 23-9 in the fourth quarter.

Jared Younger again led the Lions with 18 points. Ethan Kirr had 12 points and Josh Jones added 10 in the loss.

The boys will take on Crawford Christian School Initiative in the consolation game today with tipoff scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
