Sheffield continues to show improvement

Eliza Davidson dives for the ball in a hard fought loss at home.

Coming off of an high intensity 53-49 defeat the previous night to Brockway, Sheffield looked to regroup and contend with another team they struggled against earlier in the year, the Ridgway Lady Elkers. Despite the Lady Wolverines taking the early lead and battling back from multiple deficits, the Lady Elkers held on to knock off Sheffield 53-41.

“The second quarter we had a lull,” said Sheffield head coach Brandon Troutman in response to the girls possibly carrying over some exhaustion from the previous night’s game. “I think maybe a little tired, but nothing that excused the turnovers. For whatever reason, their (Ridgway) press always gives us trouble. We did truly better tonight than we did down there”

The Lady Elkers defensive pressure kicked in halfway into the first period, down 7-4, allowing Ridgway to force some costly Lady Wolverine turnovers and take the lead 18-7 going into the second. The Lady Wolverines had no answer for Ridgway’s Emily Fullem who posted 11 of her 31 points in the first period alone.

Fullem led the Lady Elkers into the half ahead of Sheffield 35-18.

However, Troutman credited his girls ability to bounce back to within ten in the third to make it a game again.

“Battling back from deficits with this group has been a challenge,” said Troutman. “But we’ve gotten better at it. Last night we were down 12 or 13, and we kept our composure. We fought through a lot of deficits this year. We’re showing some fight, and we’re starting to see our potential.”

Sheffield’s Eliza Davidson earned herself a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds while Mya Grubbs led the Lady Wolverines with 15 points and added five assists.

“We’re starting to kind of find ourselves again,” Troutman said. “A little too late obviously, but I’ll take it.”

The Lady Wolverines’ JV fell to Ridgway, 43-18.
