Lady Wolverines edged by Rocky Grove

Sheffield senior, Lexi Lyon gets a step on the defender in the paint going for an easy two-points.

In the third of a three-game home stand, the Lady Wolverines were hoping to salvage a victory on senior night, however, missed opportunities at the free throw line and lack of rhythm on offense proved too much to overcome, as Sheffield fell to visiting Rocky Grove 37-28.

“Offensively, I didn’t think that we got a real good rhythm going most of the night,” said Sheffield head coach Brandon Troutman. “We kind of struggled to get in sink tonight. I credit the kids for battling like they have three nights in a row. And taking teams to the wire. Defensively, aside from some of the silly fouls we had, I don’t think we could have played much of a better defensive game.”

The Lady Wolverines had seven steals, however going seven of 20 from the free throw line, while turning the ball over 19 times allowed the Orioles to maintain the lead after going ahead late in the second period.

“That’s the difference really,” said Troutman of the missed free throws. “That and missing little bunnies. Both things that plagued us all year. And it kind of reared it’s ugly head last game of the season.”

Sheffield missed on their first 12 free throws, 11 in the first half, before Eliza Davidson was able to sink one from the line. Mya Grubbs four of four at the line in the second half after going zero of four in the first. Grubbs finished with ten points, while fellow senior Lexi Lyon posted ten rebound, three blocks, and eight points.

“I told the seniors, I’ve been preaching it off and on throughout the year, but especially after the game, that this group has been through three pretty rough seasons,” said Troutman of his senior girls. “They have hung in there, battled through a lot of adversity, got stronger each year, and they were excellent leaders in the locker room and in the gym this year. I couldn’t be more proud of this group. The wins aren’t there, but where we’re going from where we were on the score board, the win-loss column, and the stat sheet to where we are now, that’s a big testament to these kids. They will definitely be a group that’s missed”
