Red Raiders edge Wolverines

Sheffield’s Kevin Rivera tries to push Cameron County’s Auttum Brown’s shoulders to the mat during their 160-pound match at Sheffield High School, Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018. Rivera pinned Brown to pick up his first win of the season.

Cameron County won four of the five contested matchups en route to a 39-30 win at Sheffield Thursday.

The Red Raiders picked up pins in three of the four wins.

“We’ve got to work in the practice room,” Sheffield coach Jack Rice said.

Ryan Chilcote got things started for Cameron County, decking Justin Bailey in 1:39 at 195 pounds.

The most hotly contested matchup was at 220. Sheffield’s Austin Gregerson held a 2-1 lead over Devin Palumbo after the first period. Gregerson started the second in the down position and quickly got a reversal and nearfall, but got caught a bit out of position while trying to put Palumbo’s shoulders down and the Raider was able to reverse and pick up a pair of near falls on Gregerson to tie the match at 8-8 heading to the final period.

Sheffield’s Nick Knowles (black) grapples for position with Cameron County’s Nate Palumbo (red) during their 285-pound match at Sheffield High School, Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018. Palumbo came away with the pinfall victory to help the Red Raiders to a 39-30 win.

Palumbo began in the down position, escaped quickly and held off multiple takedown attempts to come away with a 9-8 decision.

Sheffield’s Nick Knowles and Cameron County’s Nate Palumbo battled throughout the first period, but neither grappler was able to score a takedown. A knee injury late in the period limited Knowles’ mobility for the remainder of the bout. Palumbo took the down position to start the second and was able to take advantage of that limited mobility to score a reversal and put Knowles on his back at 3:26.

“(The injury) was big,” Rice said. “It really limited his mobility.”

There was no contest at 106 pounds. Cameron County forfeited at 113, 120, 126 and 138, while Sheffield forfeited at 132. Following all the forfeits, Sheffield held a slim 24-21 lead. Another no contest at 145 set up a pivotal match at 152 between Sheffield’s Kevin Marfink and Cameron County’s Wendell O’Brien.

Marfink was moving quickly and started the match aggressively, getting an early takedown. He couldn’t quite get O’Brien over enough to pick up a near fall and only had a 2-0 lead going into the second period. Marfink chose to start the second in the down position and it cost him. O’Brien locked Marfink up and got a pair of near falls before putting Marfink down at 3:56.

Kevin Rivera picked up the Wolverines’ lone win over Auttum Brown at 160. Rivera got an early takedown, but Brown took advantage of Rivera needing to adjust his headgear and got a reversal and the match moved into the second tied at 2-2. Brown began in the down position and quickly reversed Rivera. Rivera caught Brown riding high, reversed and put Brown on his back at 3:07 to pick up his first win of the season.

“I’m really glad to see him get the win,” Rice said. “He’s been working really hard. He’s green and it’s tough to get over that hump.”

Cameron County picked up a pair of forfeits to close out the win.

The Wolverines are back at it Tuesday when they host Port Allegany.
