Lady Knights fall to Saegertown

SAEGERTOWN – A slow start proved to be too much to overcome for Eisenhower in a 39-23 setback to Saegertown, the team directly in front of them in the Region 3 standings, on Monday.

The Lady Knights (4-6 overall, 2-2 Region 3) struggled offensively in the first half, but a three-pointer by Savannah McKown right before the half seemed to jump start them.

“We came out sluggish from the start,” said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue. “We didn’t come out with any intensity. We had a few turnovers and found ourselves down early.”

The second half was a different story, however. Eisenhower played with confidence on the offensive end and limited Saegertown’s chances with their strong defense.

“At halftime we challenged the girls to step up and play with intensity,” Logue said.

With Saegertown (5-2, 3-1) up, they decided to run some clock, which forced Eisenhower to foul.

Haley Spicer had six points to lead Eisenhower, while Lydia Giannini had four points and 10 rebounds.

“Haley Spicer did a very nice job – she was probably our best player tonight,” Logue said. “Coach Lundmark even said afterwards, we need to use this second half as a building block and go forward from here. That second half is the kind of intensity we need to have for four quarters, not just one half.”

Katelyn Young and Ava Jones had 11 points each to pace Saegertown.

The Lady Knights will look to carry that over to Thursday when they host county rival Youngsville.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 54, SHEFFIELD 28

Taylor Newton scored a game-high 20 points as Elk County Catholic knocked off Sheffield 54-28 in an AML North battle on Monday.

ECC (6-3 overall, 1-0 AML) jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back en route to the win.

“We were very careless with the ball and had too many unforced turnovers,” said Sheffield coach Brandon Troutman. “We didn’t do well running our offenses. We were flat, didn’t move well and didn’t have the vision we need. We did a lot to their benefit and not to ours.”

Lexi Lyon had another strong game for Sheffield (1-8, 0-1) with 12 points.

The Lady Wolverines will look to get back in the win column on Friday when they travel to Eisenhower for a county battle.
