Lady Dragons roll to win over District 9 foe St. Marys

Warren’s Kelsey Stuart goes up for a shot during the second half of Friday’s win over St. Marys.

The Warren Lady Dragons are getting hot at the right time.

Margo Loutzenhiser scored a game-high 27 points as the Lady Dragons earned a workmanlike 55-36 win over District 9 foe St. Marys on Friday at Joseph A. Massa Gymnasium.

“It was a good non-region game to get,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “We knew they were little, young and quick and there 1-3-1 gave us some fits early.”

The first half was tightly contested, but Warren (4-8 overall) went on a huge run in the second, 26-4. it began with a jumper from Margo Loutzenhiser and ended with a layup from Ceci Citro, and by the time it was done, the Lady Dragons had a commanding 53-28 lead.

The young Lady Dutch (7-7), weren’t intimidated early, showing off a deft shooting touch from beyond the arc.

Warren’s Alanna Hultberg goes up for a shot during the second half of Friday’s 55-36 win over St. Marys.

Known more for their ability to penetrate, they connected on eight 3s in the contest – including five in the first half.

That last of those in the first half came from Kaylee Muccio and it gave St. Marys its only lead of the game, 21-20.

Warren responded, however, scoring the final seven points of the half, on a pair of Autumn Hultberg shots, a layup by Rachel Wilson and a free throw from Loutzenhiser to go up 27-21.

“I think we did some really good things,” LaVan said. “We’re continuing to work on what we need to work on and we’re continuing to get better.”

The second half surge was spearheaded by several key plays – a 3 by Taylor Childress and an old-fashioned 3-point play by Loutzenhiser.

In the process, Warren also tightened up its defense, limiting St. Marys to just 13 points in the second half.

Wilson had another strong game on the boards with seven, while Childress played an excellent defensive game with five steals. Hultberg also dished out five assists and Loutzenhiser four.

Muccio led St. Marys with nine points, all on 3s.

Full healthy and ready to roll, the Lady Dragons have a very important week next week, beginning when they host Harbor Creek Monday in a key Region 6 battle.

“Next week is big,” Lavan said.
