Dragons come up just short against Meadville, 55-50

Warren's Devin McMeans scored 11 points against Meadville on Wednesday.

MEADVILLE – Warren went toe-to-toe on the road with one of the top teams in District 10 on Wednesday, but came up just short.

Lashon Lindsey, a 6-7 forward who came in averaging 25.2 ppg., scored all 16 of his points in the second half to rally the Bulldogs to a 55-50 non-region win.

“This would have been a good one to get,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “We played a very good first half and really game-planned into trying to take Lindsey away.”

The Dragons (5-6 overall) played a great second quarter, outscoring Meadville (9-1) 16-6 to take a 27-22 lead into halftime. Caleb Ei led the way with eight points.

The third quarter was a different story, however, as Meadville forced some turnovers out of its 2-2-1 press to quickly re-take the lead.

“Lindsey got much more active coming out in the third quarter,” Berdine said. “Against a good team we’re always thinking less than 10 turnovers is where we need to be and we weren’t anywhere close to that tonight. We always tell the kids the first three minutes of the second half are the most important and we lost that and let them back in.”

The Dragons didn’t go away, however, trailing by just one, 48-47 with 46 seconds left, but Meadville forced a key turnover and hit its free throws to come away with the win.

Ei finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals, Jake Kupchella 13 points and seven boards, Devin McMeans 11 points and Griffin Suppa seven assists and four steals.

Lindsey was one of three Meadville players in double figures, with Davyon Butler chipping in with 12 and Ryan Pero 11.

Meadville is coming off a 54-52 win over Cathedral Prep, and both teams are just outside the top ten in the latest Pennsylvania state rankings in 5A (Warren is 4A) in the ‘Others to Watch’ category.

“There are no moral victories, but this was a good opportunity for us,” said Berdine. “We’re not where we want to be defensively, but we’ve made some big improvements since playing Prep and McDowell.”

The Dragons will look to move to 3-1 in Region 6 when they travel to Harbor Creek on Tuesday.
