Craig’s monster game sends Youngsville past Iroquois

Youngsville’s Caitlin Craig brings the ball up the floor against Iroquois on Monday. Craig exploded for 28 points in the blowout win for the Lady Eagles.

Youngsville kept pace in the Region 3 playoff race, rolling to a 54-25 victory over visiting Iroquois on Monday.

The Lady Eagles outscored Iroquois 26-3 in the first half of a game that was never in doubt.

“We definitely started out well,” said Youngsville coach Andy Sveda. “Everyone was taking good shots, we really passed the ball well and played great defense. Caitlin (Craig) was hot from three.”

Craig hit four three points as part of a huge game, scoring 28 points, or three more than Iroquois scored.

With the win, Youngsville moves to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in Region 3. The Lady Eagles are now half a game out of fourth place in the region, right behind Cochranton (8-7, 5-3).

Youngsville will play again Thursday at Maplewood.

MAPLEWOOD 61, EISENHOWER 29

GUYS MILLS – Maplewood connected on three first quarter three-pointers to open a lead it would never relinquish in a 61-29 win over visiting Eisenhower Monday.

Maggie Hunter scored 15 of her game-high 26 points in the second quarter.

“She had a two and a three in the first quarter . . . in the second quater six twos and a three to blow the game wide open,” Eisenhower coach Mike Logue said. “She is without question their go-to scorer.”

Maplewood (12-2 overall, 7-1 Region 3) held a 34-13 lead at the half. Hunter pressed the issue further with another pair of threes in the third quarter.

The Knights (4-10, 2-6) had looks in the low post, but couldn’t convert on the opportunities, either from the field or the free throw line. Eisenhower’s primary post players, Emily Wheeler, Lydia Giannini and Miranda Garris, were a combined 4-17 from the free throw line.

“We were getting opportunities and getting to the foul line,” Logue said. “We need to take advantage.”

Wheeler led Eisenhower with eight points and eight rebounds. Sophie Varndell was also in double digits for the Tigers with 12 points.

Eisenhower returns home Wednesday when the Knights host cross-county rival Sheffield.
