Warren suffers close loss to defending W.Va. state champ Fairmont

Morgan Lupole had seven points in a close 48-43 setback to defending West Virginia state champion Fairmont on Friday.

CALIFORNIA – Warren might be the best 1-win team in the state going into the new year.

And while it’s not something they would have signed up for at the start of the season, they nevertheless have a lot to build on following a 48-43 setback to defending West Virginia state champion Fairmont on Day 2 of the Cal U. Holiday Classic.

“It really just came down to a couple of possessions here and there,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “We had a few turnovers that we would have liked to have back, but we played really well.”

Fairmont had quite a bit coming back from last season’s team and currently has a No. 2 state ranking. They got a balanced effort, with 11 different players finding the scorebook.

Morgan Lilley led the way with 10 points, while Angela DeLorenzo scored all seven of her points in the fourth quarter, going 7-of-8 from the free throw line to help seal the win for the Polar Bears (8-1).

The Lady Dragons got 16 points from Margo Loutzenhiser, eight points and eight rebounds from Rachel Wilson and seven points each from Morgan Lupole and Gracie Wood.

They also got a great experience at Cal, home to former Lady Dragon standouts D.J. Hahn and Paige Wilson, both sophomores. Hahn is a key member of the basketball team, while Wilson is a starter on the softball team.

“It was cool, we got to see D.J. and Paige,” LaVan said. “We got to play on a college floor, both varsity and JV. We like getting away, going on our trips and getting good competition. We played the best two teams down here (they played Canon-McMillan on Thursday, which routed Belle Vernon on Friday) and that’s the way we like it.”

And as for the record?

“Our record doesn’t tell the story, but that’s alright,” she said.

“We know what we’ve put in, we know what those games were like and we know what we’re trying to do.”

The Lady Dragons return to action on Thursday, hosting McDowell.
