Lady Lions top Bethel in opener

The Warren County Christian School girls basketball team opened its 2017-18 season with a 28-17 win over Erie Bethel on Monday.

Leading the way for the Lady Lions was Rachel Brenner, who connected for a game-high 14 points.

WCCS jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter and led throughout.

“Our two seniors, (Rebekah) Erdman and Brenner, had a really strong defensive performance,” said WCCS coach Tom Jones. “We played strong man-to-man defense and were able to control the tempo of the game. We had more turnovers than we like, but I was pleased for the first game.”

The boys, meanwhile, came out on the short end of a hard-fought 48-29 decision.

Jared Younger had 14 points and Josh Jones eight for the Lions.

“We played hard,” coach Jones said. “We struggled against their full court press and had way too many turnovers. We had a strong game from Josh Jones and Jared Younger. We need to get some of the other guys getting used to the pressure.”
