Knights keep momentum with win over Corry

Garrett Head and the EIsenhower Knights earned a 7th place finish at the Tool City Tournament on Saturday in Meadville.

A pair of quick pins at 106 and 113 pounds turned the momentum in Eisenhower’s favor and the Knights went on to defeat visiting Corry, 48-30, Tuesday.

The win kept the momentum going after an impressive third-place finish at the STOWA Tournament over the weekend.

“We wrestled so much this weekend,” said Eisenhower coach Kris Black. “Corry is one of the better teams (on our schedule) and we didn’t want to have a let down.”

The Beavers led 21-18 entering the 106-pound matchup.

Easton Hedman needed just 1:24 to earn a fall over Lucas Munsee at 106, while Logan Jaquay put Lucas Peterson on his back just 42 seconds into their 113-pound contest.

“(Those pins) were big,” Black said. “Those guys knew what they had to do and they just did it.”

Spencer Head got things started for Eisenhower, pinning John Curtis in 1:19. The Knights had a forfeit at 160, and Ethan Chambers fought off Dylan Gourley as long as he could, but Gourley eventually earned a third-period pin to put Corry up 12-6.

Justin Hagberg got the points back for Eisenhower at 182. Hagberg took down Caden Bidwell early in the first period, but Bidwell escaped and got Hagberg on his back late in the period. Hagberg was able to earn some back points of his own in the second, but a late escape had Bidwell up 8-6 heading into the third. Bidwell tried to shoot to start the third, but Hagberg turned it around and put Bidwell down for a pin.

“That was a big turning point and against a good kid,” Black said. “Hagberg is working hard and he’s having more and more success.”

The Knights forfeited again at 195 before Matt Huling pinned Sean Proctor in 3:37 at 220 to tie the bout at 18-18.

The 285-pound match between Eisenhower’s Joseph Bauer and Corry’s Megan Gourley started slow, but finished with a flourish. Both wrestlers were hesitant to take shots in the first period, and it remained scoreless heading into the second. Gourley started the second in the down position, and Bauer was able to maintain control through the period. He was caught on his escape attempt to start the third period, and Gourley was able to turn him enough to gain back points. Bauer was able to escape following a blood time, but Gourley held on for a 7-5 decision.

The pins at 106 and 113 put the Knights up 30-21. Corry’s Derek Hurd was able to pin Jake Williams in the second period of their 120-pound match to make it 30-27. A Corry forfeit at 126 pushed the Eisenhower lead to 36-27.

Nate Holt took care of Keaton Chase in 2:38 to increase the Knights lead to 42-27.

At 138, Sam Holt took a 4-2 lead into the third period in his match against Nick Lapinski. Lapinski was able to escape late in the period, then secured a takedown at the buzzer to come away with a 5-4 decision.

Perhaps the Knights most impressive win was at 145. In the final match of the evening, Garrett Head was able to pin Joey Perry just over a minute into the second period.

“Perry’s a great kid,” Black said. “Garrett Head is getting better each match.”

The Knights now turn their attention southwest as they will host cross-county rival Youngsville Thursday.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Black said. “It should be a good match.”

COUDESPORT 36,

SHEFFIELD 30

COUDERSPORT – The Sheffield Wolverines dropped a hard-fought match on the road at Coudersport, 36-30.

Jake Davidson, Daniel Muladze, Nick Knowles, Kevin Marfink and Kyle Agee all earned wins for the Wolverines.

“I thought boys wrestle very well tonight,” said Sheffield coach Jack Rice. “We had several good matches with Jake Davidson, Daniel Muladze, Nick Knowles, Kevin Marfink, and Kyle Agee getting falls to keep the match close. We are really young and new so those bonus points really help us out. Freshman Ethan Finch turned in a good performance despite a 6-1 loss against a senior David Kudrick who was a regional qualifier a year ago.”

Sheffield returns to action Thursday at Johnsonburg.
