Eisenhower wrestlers open season with win at North East

Alex Barnett and the Eisenhower Knights opened their season with a win against North East.

NORTH EAST – The first time out on the mat this season couldn’t have gone much better for the Eisenhower Knights.

Ike turned in a number of impressive performances in a season-opening 57-24 Region 3 win over North East on Thursday.

“It was nice to get on the mat – these guys are tired of beating each other up,” said Eisenhower coach Kris Black.

The Knights recorded seven pins and got strong performances from some young wrestlers, as well as several who were making their return to the mat.

“Ethan Chambers (170) and Joey Bauer (220), it was their first time back after a couple of years and they both came up with pins tonight and wrestled well,” Black said.

“Easton Hedman (106), his first time out getting a pin, looked really good. Jake Williams got beat by one of their better guys, but I though he wrestled strong against a kid he knows is one of the best in the district (Caiden Eastman). Nate (Holt) went against one of their best guys (Garrett Kopp), and even though he got pinned, the result wasn’t indicative to the type of match that it was.”

Two of the Knights’ top returners, Spencer Head (152) and Matt Huling (195) won by forfeit, while Alex Barnett (160), Justin Hagberg (182) and Logan Jaquay (113) earned pins and Garrett Head had the most exciting match of the night, earning a 12-10 overtime decision over North East’s Devin Muscarella at 145 to cap the victory.

“We have some pretty strong leaders on our team and overall I thought it was a good team effort,” noted Black.

As Black said, the Knights were eager to get on the mat, especially after having their opening match against Saegertown on Tuesday postponed because of weather. That match will now be made up on Jan. 22 (a Monday) at Eisenhower.

“The thing of it is, we didn’t get a practice in on Tuesday and Wednesday, we got some guys who weren’t able to get a workout in (due to bussing issues),” he said. “We had a lot of things going on and I thought we managed the emotions well.”

The Knights return to action this Friday and Saturday at the STOWA Tournament before their home opener on Tuesday against Corry.
