Dragons surpass century mark in win over VisionQuest
FRANKLIN – Jeff Berdine is in his 15th season as head coach of the Warren basketball program, and never before has his team scored 100 points in a game.
That all changed on Saturday, however, as the Dragons scorched the nets for 65 points in the first half en route to a 104-73 win over VisionQuest in the consolation game of the Franklin Tip-Off Tournament.
Jake Kupchella had 24 points and Caleb Ei 23 – both career high’s, while Andrew Davidson (15), Colby Johnson (13) and Aidan Morrison (10), also had career nights scoring.
“Offensively a lot of things went right,” Berdine said. “I thought we moved the ball and were aggressive off the dribble. Both Caleb and Jake were aggressive off the dribble – Jake scored 16 of his 24 points in the first half.”
The Dragons also made nine 3’s, led by Johnson, who had four.
“In terms of shooting the ball, we did a good job of making the extra pass,” Berdine said. “We were able to get out on the break quite a bit. Even on their makes, we got out on our secondary break quite a bit.”
It was a big change from Friday’s opener against Cambridge Springs.
“We stressed (after the Cambridge Springs games) about being aggressive against their (Vision Quest’s) zone,” noted Berdine. “There were a lot of gaps and a lot of opening for attack and Griffin (Suppa), Jake and Aidan were aggressive in getting into those gaps and creating open shots.”
Suppa also had 10 points, as a total of six Dragons reached double figures scoring.
Demetrius Chambers led VisionQuest (0-2) with 20 points.
“Playing again right away off a loss, sometimes that’s a good thing,” Berdine said. “I liked the effort.”
This week will provide a big challenge for Warren (1-1), as they have road games at McDowell on Tuesday and at Cathedral Prep on Friday.
“These are good opportunities to see where we’re at,” Berdine said.
