Dragons fall in tight battle with Rocky Grove
OIL CITY – Warren played one really good half against Rocky Grove in the Oil City Blue & White Holiday Tournament, but a poor third quarter proved to be too much to overcome in a 71-64 setback.
Rocky Grove (7-1), currently listed as ‘Others to Watch’ in the Class 2A state rankings, got 22 points from senior guard Tyler Clayton, 13 of which came in the second half.
If that weren’t enough, the Dragons also had to contend with the talented frontcourt of 6-7 Travis Perry, who scored 19 points, and 6-4 Conner Curran, who added 14.
“Basically it was an even, well-played game in the first half by both teams,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “We didn’t play very well in the third quarter, turned the ball over and took some bad shots. “I thought they did a good job in the second half offensively slowing the pace down and getting the ball inside. The Clayton kid played real well in the second half and hit some big shots in the run they put on.”
The Dragons once again had a strong effort from beyond the arc, connecting on 10 3’s.
Jake Kupchella scored a team-high 19 points, one of four Dragons (3-4) in double figures. Aidan Morrison had 14 points, Griffin Suppa 12 and Colby Johnson 11, including a team-high three 3’s.
Suppa had his usual solid all-around game with five rebounds and four assists, while Caleb Ei also had five boards and Devin McMeans three assists.
It was a tough result against a good team in a game the Dragons feel like they could have won, but they will get right back at it today against Vision Quest at 4:30 p.m.. VQ lost to host Oil City 80-29.
The Dragons met VQ back in the consolation game of the Franklin Tip-Off and scored 104 points in an easy win.
