Wilson in 8th after first round of PIAA golf championships

Rachel Wilson is in eighth place after Day 1 of the PIAA 3A girls golf championships.

YORK – It wasn’t Rachel Wilson’s best day in the first round of the PIAA 3A girls golf championships at Heritage Hills, but she still kept herself in contention for a top five finish.

The Warren senior carded an 82, which is good for sole possession of eighth place heading into today’s final round.

“Rachel didn’t have the day she wanted to but she didn’t give up to finish day one in the top 10,” said Warren coach Dan Passmore. “Her goal tomorrow is to finish top five. It’s a tricky course that you have to hit a lot of landing areas.”

Ellen Wager of Manheim Township carded an even par 72 to take a one shot lead over Lauren Freyvogel of Pine-Richland.

Wilson’s round began with a birdie on the Par 4 first, followed by four straight bogeys, a double bogey on six, a birdie on seven (Par 5), par on eight and bogey on 9 to go out in 41.

She posted the same score on the back nine, including a pair of birdies on the 14th (Par 4) and the 18th (Par 5) to close out her round.

To crack the top five, she will need to overtake a group that includes a tie for fifth after the first round between Caroline Wrigley of North Allegheny and Jessica Meyers of Oakland Catholic, who each shot 78.

Wilson will tee off at 10:30 a.m. today and be in the the group with Wrigley, Meyers and Kendel Abrams of Susquehannock (+7).
