Warren rolls past Franklin on Senior Night
‘“We played well,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan. “I guess we have to keep the momentum going because we have a big one on Thursday.”
That big one on Thursday is a match against Conneaut that will go a long way toward determining the top 3A seed from Region 4.
But first things first.
Kelsey Dilks, Jessie Sweigart and Emily Hannak were honored between the JV and varsity matches and helped the Dragons get off to a strong start.
Dilks had a pair of early kills as Warren (12-2) jumped out to an early 4-2 lead.
Franklin hung tough however, and tied the Dragons at 14-14 before back-to-back kills by Celia Chase and Dilks gave them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Lydia Latimer put an exclamation point on the first game with her ending kill.
The second game wasn’t nearly as close.
Leading 9-6, Sweigart came up with a kill that started a big run, also spearheaded by Chase, Grace Wortman and Ellie Lobdell.
Lobdell was serving for much of the run, which ended with Warren leading 24-9 and closing it out at 25-10.
The third game saw Franklin jump out to a 6-1 lead, only to watch as Warren rattled off the next nine points, thanks to kills from Lobdell, Wortman and Latimer.
Franklin cut the deficit to 12-11, but it was all Warren after that, as Lex Nyquist once again set a brilliant match.
Leading the Dragons were Dilks (5 kills, 1 dig, 1 ace), Sweigart (1 kill, 1 block), Hannak (1 dig), Julia Lobdell (2 aces, 4 digs, 1 kill), Latimer (8 kills, 7 digs, 1 ace), Lobdell (4 assists, 5 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces), Chase (4 kills, 7 digs, 1 ace), Wortman (5 kills, 1 dig), Jordan Sitler (2 kills), Hannah Shattuck (1 kill) and Nyquist (27 assists, 7 digs, 2 kills).
The JV team won 25-17, 25-17.
Leading the Dragons were Shattuck (6 kills, 3 digs) and Marylin Shene (6 kills, 1 block).
Looming is the match with Conneaut on Thursday.
“I’m happy with how we played tonight,” Dolan said. “We know if we win on Thursday, we have the top seed from the region in 3A. We have to play well and we have been playing well. It should be a fun game.”
