Dragons open season with first place finish at Meadville

JAKE MCCULLOUGH

MEADVILLE – Defending Region 3 champion Warren has its sights set on another title in 2017 and Monday’s season-opening Region 3 match at the Country Club of Meadville was certainly a good start.

Jake McCullough carded a 75, which was good for medalist honors as the Dragons team score of 330 outpaced second place Meadville (346) on the Bulldogs’ home course.

“Jake didn’t play particularly well on the front nine, then came back on the back nine and shot a 33,” said Warren coach Dan Passmore. “If you can do that – have an off day and shoot a 75 – you can compete in this district.”

Rachel Wilson and Joey Sidon tied for the second low round for the Dragons at 84. Wilson is competing on the boys team this season due to a lack of female players, and more than held her own.

Zack and Alex Fincher both carded 87s for the Dragons.

While 330 was good enough to win, a team score of 310 is well within reach for the Dragons, according to Passmore.

Meadville’s Ryan Ferry shot a 76, the only other round in the 70s.

The next Region 3 match is Thursday at Grove City. They along with Meadville are considered the top challengers to the Dragons in the region.

“That’s another one that’s going to tell us where we stand,” Passmore said.
