Warren boys split with Oil City, Meadville

Tai Phan won the 300 hurdles in Tuesday's meet against Oil City.

OIL CITY – The Warren boys track and field team earned a split on Tuesday, besting Oil City 90-50 and falling in a close matchup with Meadville 74-56. The girls fell in both meets, but still had a number of strong performances.

Ben Thomas (100, 200, long jump), Troy Shattuck (400, 800) and Blake Ristau (1600, 3200) were all multiple individual event winners for the Dragons, with Shattuck and Ristau taking first in both of those events against the Bulldogs as well.

Noah Burcher (110 hurdles), Tai Phan (300 hurdles) and Kyle Adams (triple jump) also took firsts against OC, as did Noah Becker (shot put, discus) and Tristan Davis (high jump) against Meadville. The 400 relay team of Adams, Nathan Edwards, Mitchell Bryant and Thomas also won against Oil City.

“We knew coming into today’s meet that Meadville would present a challenge for us. It ended up being a really close match up that we just found ourselves on the wrong end of,” said Warren coach Kevin Dustin. “Many events ended up very close and we just didn’t come away with enough of them on our side. We have had some illness on the team limiting our full team, but for those that were able to compete they really held their own. We are very proud of many of the guys that stepped up to do events they weren’t used to in order to make the meet as close as it was.”

For the girls, Olivia Ashbaugh stepped up to win the 100 against Oil City, as did Paige McCullough in the 100 hurdles and Lydia Latimer in the 400, as well as the 1600 relay team of Ashbaugh, Latimer, Bri Ristau and Michaela Lind.

Naomi Hahn won the 1600 and 3200 in both duals, as did Latimer in the high jump. Lind also won the 800 against the Bulldogs and Haley Nelson the shot put. Gabby Hahn took second in the 400 against Oil City and Ashbaugh second in both the 100 and 200.

“Meadville and Oil City are always tough competition. We knew both have strong middle and long distance squads but our girls really rose the occasion and scored some major points,” said coach Elizabeth Beardsley. “Their hard work is paying off and they’re all seeing their times go down. Haley Nelson picked up points in the throws, Olivia and Paige in the sprints, and Lydia and Myah (Madril) in the jumps. We’re in a good spot for this point in the season.”
