Dutch hand Dragons first loss of season in non-region action

Warren’s Adam Irwin pitched four innings, giving up three runs (one earned) in Saturday’s game against St. Marys.

St. Marys’ hot bats handed Warren its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon.

Nate Beimel and Jeff Wehler each went deep, while Mike Beimel tossed a complete game in a 9-4 non-region win over the Dragons (3-1) at Old Legion Field.

The Dutch had three multiple run innings in the first, sixth and seventh, outhitting the Dragons 12-5

It started with two outs in the first, as Wehler, a Youngstown St. commit, singled and Nate Beimel followed with a ball that cleared the fence off of Warren starter Adam Irwin.

The Dragons responded by getting one back in the bottom of the inning, with Austyn Cummings’ hard hit ground ball being misplayed, allowing Derek Knapp to score. Mike Beimel was able to escape further damage, however, as he got a ground ball double play off the bat of Nate Betts to end the inning.

St. Marys (2-3) got that run back in the third. Wehler took a 1-2 pitch from Irwin and sent it well over the left field fence to make it 3-1.

Irwin went four innings, yielding three runs – only one of which was earned.

Nate Beimel continued his hot hitting day in the fifth, doubling to bring in a run to make it 4-1.

The Dutch were far from done, however, as a pair of singles of RBI singles by Brandon Sicheri and Mike Beimel and a sac fly off the bat of Tim Beimel made it 7-1.

Warren got two back in the bottom of the sixth, with Cummings lacing an RBI double to center. That was part of a 2-for-3 effort and he came around to score on an error to make it 7-3, but St. Marys got those two runs back in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

The one bright spot about the loss was the fact that it was a non-region game. The Dragons will look to make it 2-0 in Region 6 play when they host Corry on Monday.
