WAHS student Black garners equestrian honors

Summer Black, a student at Warren Area High School and a member of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association, competed in the IEA Region 8/9 Finals with her team – the Lake Erie Equestrian in Rochester, NY.

Black won the Varsity Intermediate Over Fences Division and placed in the Varsity Open on the Flat Division, which qualified her for the IEA Zone 2 Finals in both divisions.

She will be traveling to Buffalo, NY in three weeks to compete against other qualified riders from Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey for one of four possible positions at the 2017 IEA National Finals.

At the Regional Finals, she also tied for the 2017 Region 8/9 High School High Point Rider. In the 2016-17 regular season, she became the Region 9 Varsity intermediate Over Fences Reserve Champion and placed fourth overall in the Varsity Open on the Flat Division.

Outside of IEA, Summer trains and competes on her own horse, Lite of Dawn (pictured above). This past year they have received the 2016 AQHA Rookie Hunter Hack Top Three award, 2016 EHSC Junior Equitation Rider of the Year award and is currently leading their four divisions at Chagrin Valley Farms in Chagrin Falls, OH. She has also competed in the USEF Equestrian Athletic Program, which allowed her to letter as an athlete at WAHS, along with the United States Equestrian Federation.
