Playoff primer: District 10 basketball

Eisenhower’s Thomas Warren surveys the defense during the Knights’ first round 2A playoff win over Mercyhurst Prep.

The District 10 basketball playoffs are upon us.

Brackets will officially be released on Wednesday, with boys ‘Round of 16’ games on Friday and girls on Saturday.

Both the Warren and Eisenhower boys and girls teams will be a part of their respective fields, while the Youngsville boys and girls decided to opt out.

Here’s a look at where each team stands going into the final play dates of the regular season and who they could potentially match-up with.

GIRLS

5A

If there is one class that could see a major shake-up between now and Wednesday, this is it.

Fort LeBoeuf and Harbor Creek are both 10-3 in Region 6, one game ahead of Warren and Central Tech.

With Strong Vincent, Conneaut and Meadville opting out, the top three teams will receive byes to the quarterfinals, while the fourth place team will have to play a ‘Round of 16’ game on Saturday.

For the Warren girls, they would be the third seed out of the Region 6 right now based on having a better overall record than Central. They have two games remaining – a region contest at home against East today and at Mercyhurst Prep in a non-region game on Wednesday.

Right now, it is still possible them to be anywhere from the top seed to the fourth seed out of Region 6, although a win over East would put them in good position to get a bye.

Slippery Rock has secured the Region 6 championship, while Girard and General McLane are locked into either second and third and should also receive byes.

Four teams from District 10 will advance to the state playoffs.

Playoff teams: Slippery Rock, Girard, Hickory, General McLane, Grove City, Fort LeBoeuf, Harbor Creek, Warren, Central Tech, Corry

Monday’s other Region 6 games: Harbor Creek at Fort LeBoeuf, Corry at Central Tech, Strong Vincent at McDowell

2A

The Lady Knights, with an 8-13 overall record and 6-7 in Region 3 are locked into fifth place and appear likely to play the fourth place team in Region 1, Reynolds, in a first round game on Saturday.

That is all subject to change, of course, but appears to be the most likely scenario, as Reynolds (10-9, 7-6) is locked into the four spot in R-1.

West Middlesex and Cochranton are the respective region champions and will receive byes. In fact, it looks as if only two first round games will be played, with the other six teams automatically advancing to the quarterfinal round on Feb. 23.

Three teams will advance to the state playoffs.

Playoff teams: West Middlesex, Reynolds, Mercer, Rocky Grove, Cochranton, Cambridge Springs, Maplewood, Saegertown, Eisenhower, Iroquois

BOYS

2A

The great news for Eisenhower is that they can wrap-up second place in Region 3 and a first round bye with a win over Youngsville on Tuesday. The only drawback to receiving the bye is that they would lose a home playoff game, with quarterfinal games going to neutral sites.

The top two teams in Regions 3 and 4 receive first round buys. Rocky Grove and Wilmington are locked in Region 2, Cambridge Springs in Region 3 and with a win the Knights.

A loss to Youngsville and the door would be open ajar just slightly for Cochranton to sneak into the second spot.

Three teams will advance to the state playoffs.

Playoff teams: Rocky Grove, Wilmington, West Middlesex, Reynolds, Mercer, Lakeview, Cambridge Springs, Eisenhower, Cochranton, Iroquois, Maplewood, Union City.

4A

This is where District 10 not re-seeding when a team opts out can really look bad.

Strong Vincent, the Region 6 champion, appears destined to play an opening round game, while Region 5 champ Grove City, because of opt-outs, looks like to receive a bye, as does Region 6’s second place team Harbor Creek.

For Warren, whether or not they get to host a first round game will largely depend on what they do in their regular season finale at Corry on Tuesday. A win by the Dragons and they will host the fifth place team out of Region 5, either Hickory or Farrell. A loss would bump Fort LeBoeuf into fourth based on overall record and likely send the Dragons to Franklin (Region 5’s fourth place team).

Four teams will advance to the state playoffs.

Playoff teams: Grove City, Sharon, George Junior Republic, Franklin, Farrell, Hickory, Slippery Rock, Strong Vincent, Harbor Creek, General McLane, Warren, Fort LeBoeuf, Corry
