McLane tops Warren on senior night

Warren’s Jake Kupchella surveys the defense while being guarded by General McLane’s Kyle Berger during Tuesday’s Region 6 contest.

Warren had its sight set on a senior night against General McLane on Tuesday. The Lancers had other plans.

Seth Myers scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half and Alex Jay 12 of his 19 in the second half as GM came out of Joseph A. Massa Gymnasium with a 60-43 win over the Dragons.

“My hope was to be able to contain them offensively and we did for a little bit,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “They got hot in the second quarter and forced us out of our zone.”

Tied at 18-18 in the second quarter, the Lancers went on a 11-1 run to close the first half and scored on five-straight possessions to begin the second to take a 39-25 lead.

Griffin Suppa followed with a 3 and back-to-back buckets by Noah Becker and Kohl Nosel got the Dragons back to single digits at 41-32, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.

Warren’s Braidy Blair goes up for a shot while being defended by Geneal McLane’s Alex Jay during Tuesday’s game, as teammate Seth Baldensperger (3) and McLane’s Jon Solberg (13) look on.

Jay went to work, scoring 10 points in a four-minute span, followed by back-to-back triples by Jon Solberg and Kyle Berger that put GM up 51-34 at the end of three.

“Jay took over in the third quarter,” Berdine noted. “He’s a tough matchup for us. Offensively, he’s very polished. He can go inside or outside.”

That forced the Dragons (7-11 overall, 4-5 Region 6) into chase mode, not a great recipe against the Lancers.

“When you have to chase offensively, sometimes you press,” Berdine said. “Sometimes you have to be good enough defensively when your shots aren’t falling.”

In the first half, Jake Kupchella knocked down a three and Suppa followed with an old-fashioned 3-point play to tie the game at 18-all, but Myers was a difference maker for McLane (9-7, 4-4).

Warren’s Tyler Gillotti looks to make a move while being guarded by Geneal McLane’s Seth Myers during the first half of Tuesday’s senior night contest.

“The Myers kid came out and scored the ball well in the first half,” Berdine said. “That was huge for them, because Jay and Solberg were struggling to score the ball. He gave them a huge lift.”

Suppa led the Dragons with 14 points, while Becker had nine points and eight rebounds and Braidy Blair six boards.

Warren has all region games on the road the rest of the regular season, starting with David Morris and Strong Vincent on Thursday.
