Ike’s Jaquay, Head, Youngville’s Lehman advance to regionals

Eisenhower’s Logan Jaquay controls Cochranton’s Shane Peterson during their 106-pound fifth place match at Saturday’s District 10 Class 2A wrestilng championships at Sharon High School.

SHARON – It’s on to the Northwest Regional for Eisenhower’s Logan Jaquay and Spencer Head, as well as Youngsville’s Nathan Lehman.

Jaquay (113) and Head (152) both won their fifth place matches at the District 10 Class 2A championships on Saturday at Sharon High School, while Lehman finished sixth at 126 to advance.

Jaquay earned a 7-0 decision over Cochranton’s Shane Peterson in the fifth place match, while Head topped Harbor Creek’s Shane Watkins, 3-0.

It was an impressive bounce back for both, after dropping their semifinal and consolation semifinal bouts.

“I don’t think either of them are satisfied with fifth, but the goal is to move on and they are doing that,” said Eisenhower coach Kris Black. ”

Eisenhower’s Spencer Head looks on shortly before his 152-pound fifth place match against Harbor Creek’s Shane Watkins. Head went on to win, 3-0.

Head lost 10-3 in the semis to eventual 152-pound champ Cameron Prebble of Sharpsville and dropped a tight 4-3 decision to Fort LeBoeuf’s Brent Burbules in the consolation semis.

“Spencer lost a really close match there with a last-second reversal and bouncing back like that with a win (in fifth place match) was key,” noted Black.

Jaquay came back from being pinned by runner-up Steven McGarvie of Fort LeBoeuf in the semifinals, followed by a close 6-4 setback to North East’s Caiden Eastman in the consolation semifinals.

“For Logan just being a freshman, the sky is the limit for him,” Black said.

Lehman, meanwhile, came back from a 13-6 quarterfinal loss to Owen Clayton of Lakeview to beat Brayden Knauf of Greenville 6-4, following that up with a dominant 11-1 major decision over Dawson Barthlomew of Saegertown to earn his place in the top six.

He took injury default’s in the consolation semifinals and fifth place matches.

The Knights had four other wrestlers who came up one win short of finishing in the top six and advancing to regionals – Josh Bortz at 113, who lost a 9-5 decision to Judah Gardner (Union City)’ Sam Holt at 132, who fell 3-1 to Dylan McConnell (Lakeview)’ Garrett Head at 145, who was tech falled by Josh Christner (Greenville); and Alex Barnett, who was pinned by Nick Enos (Sharpsville).

“The good thing is, all those guys won a match at districts and have an idea what it is now,” Black said. “That’s a positive. Everybody gave us a good effort on Saturday. They did a really good job, they just ran into some buzzsaw’s.”

He said for Head and Jaquay, things will stay pretty similar as they prepare for the Northwest Regional.

“We’re not really going to change anything this week,” he said. “We may game plan specifically for different guys we know we may see, little things we might be able to score with. We’ll go light tomorrow (Monday) and hard go’s Tuesday and Wednesday

“It’s really just fine-tuning. Stick with the lady that brought you to the dance. It’s no different than any other tournament, that’s how we approach it. Hopefully we’ll have a good week of practice and be ready to go on Friday.”

Like districts, the Class 2A Northwest Regional is also at Sharon High School.
