Ike’s Jaquay, Head advance to District 10 2A semifinals

Eisenhower's Logan Jaquay advanced to the D-10 Class 2A semifinals at 106 pounds on Friday.

SHARON – It’s on to the semifinals for Eisenhower’s Logan Jaquay and Spencer Head at the District 10 Class 2A wrestling championships.

Jaquay earned a 3-2 decision over James Gulla of Hickory in the first round and followed that up with a pin of Cochranton’s Shane Peterson in the quarterfinals

“Logan and Spencer both wrestled really well tonight,” said Eisenhower coach Kris Black. “Especially Logan. His first match was against the kid from Hickory who was seeded second in his section but lost to the No.1 ranked kid in the state. Logan gave up an early takedown but came back and wrestled a good, smart match. For a freshman coming into districts, that’s really impressive.”

Head, meanwhile, improved to 30-4 with a tech fall over Maplewood’s J.D. McFadden after receiving a first round bye.

Head’s older brother Louie, now a freshman at Lock Haven, followed a similar path en route to the 2016 D-10 title.

“Spencer wrestled a kid that’s pretty tough,” noted Black. “He wrestled a smart match and found opportunities to score. I thought it was a really nice warm-up match for him going into the semis tomorrow.”

A number of wrestlers remain alive to earn a top six spot and a trip to the Northwest Regional Tournament, including Youngsville’s Nathan Lehman and Austin Spear and Eisenhower’s Sam Holt and Alex Barnett, among others. Those four dropped quarterfinal matches after winning their first round bouts.

“Everyone wrestled really well tonight,” Black said. “We had some tough draws here and there. Alex Barnett looked really good in both his matches and Sam Holt wrestled well. We’re looking to get as many of those kids into the top six to advance to regionals. That’s what it’s all about, advancing and having another chance next week.”

The tournament resumes at 9:30 a.m. today. The consolation finals for third and fifth place will be held at 4 p.m., with the Parade of champions at 5:30.
