Warren dealt setback in final regular season game

ERIE – Some nights, the shots just don’t fall.

That was the case for the Warren girls on Wednesday, as they fell to a talented Mercyhurst Prep team, 56-21.

The Lady Dragons actually started out strong, owning a 7-6 lead after the first quarter.

“The first quarter went really well,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “We came out and executed pretty well offensively and defensively.”

That lead was short-lived, however, as the Lakers (19-3) went on a 14-3 run in the second quarter to take a 20-10 advantage at halftime.

The third quarter is where things really came undone for Warren (17-5), as Mercyhurst outscored them 23-2.

“We just couldn’t make a shot from the field,” LaVan said. “Give credit to Mercyhurst Prep’s defense, but sometimes you just have those nights. Everybody had one on the same night, which usually doesn’t happen.”

Emily Shopene led a balanced effort for Mercyhurst Prep with 13 points, while Autumn Hultberg had a strong game for Warren with nine points and nine rebounds.

Warren will look to put this one in the rear view mirror quickly as they get set to host Grove City in the first round of the District 10 5A playoffs on Saturday (3 p.m.).

“It’s a new season,” LaVan said. “We’ll be ready to go.”
