Ike wins Sharon Duals

SHARON –  It was quite a weekend for Eisenhower at the Sharon Duals, as the Knights went 4-1 and came home with the team title.

After suffering their only loss to Chartiers-Houston (38-36), the Knights came back to beat Corry in the semifinals and best the Bucs in the championship.

Eisenhower coach Kris Black noted that his team gave up some bonus points to C-H in the first match, as well as losing a couple of close bouts. That all changed in the second meeting.

“Afterwards (the loss) we had a little sit down talk to re-focus ourselves,” Black said. “The kids focused and found another gear. They got going against Corry and beat some of their better kids and that really fired them up for the next match with Chartiers-Houston.”

After losing handily to Corry back in December, that match more than any was proof of just how much the Knights have grown as a team in the past month-plus.

“Corry really put it on us earlier in the year,” Black said. “We have some kids who are new to the sport this year and all of them are buying into the program, buying into the system and believing in what we’re doing. They’re really working hard and it’s nice to see them have success.”

Also included in Ike’s run was an early victory over Iroquois in dominating fashion, 69-7.

The success in Sharon should serve as a springboard for a very big week ahead for EHS. They host North East on Tuesday in a key region match, followed by a county showdown with Warren on Friday.

The match against the Dragons is being billed as the ‘Clash for Cancer.’ The Jock Shop has provided t-shirts for the match, which will help raise money for the cancer society.

“It’s really about community and cancer awareness,” noted Black.

On the mat, his team is looking forward to what lies ahead.

“The match with North East is a key region match and should be close,” he said. “Warren is a powerhouse – they’re really having a good year and have been wrestling well. We’re hoping to come in and compete with them.”
