Eagles fall to Maplewood 49-33 in Region 3 action
The Youngsville Eagles came up short in their bid to jump a spot in the Region 3 standings, losing to Maplewood by a final score of 49-33 Tuesday at Youngsville High School.
The Eagles and Tigers were tied midway through the first quarter before Maplewood slowly began to pull away. Tanner Backus, Jordan Johns and Jacob Roser all connected from beyond the arc in the second quarter to help the visitors stretch their advantage to 28-17 at the half.
“They had more depth than we did,” said Youngsville coach Jim Kesterholt. “I thought my kids battled tonight. We knew it was going to be a steep climb. We did play well in the first half, they just knocked down some shots in the second half and got some separation — they also went to the line quite a few more times than we did once again.”
Backus scored seven of his game-high 15 points in the third quarter as the Tigers improved their record to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in Region 3.
Wyatt Rugar led Youngsville with 14 points while Brady Kesterholt added another nine despite facing constant pressure from the Maplewood defense. The Eagles were without starting guard Levi Hendrickson, who missed the game with a concussion.
Youngsville (1-9, 1-4) returns to action Wednesday against Cochranton at home. The game was originally scheduled to be played last week, but was postponed due to freezing rain in the area.
The Eagles fell in Tuesday’s JV game, 37-23.
