Cards top Eagles

Youngsville’s Wyatt Rugar goes through a pair of Cochranton defenders for two points during Wednesay’s Region 3 battle.

Playing short-handed and in foul trouble, Youngsville fell to Cochranton in a Region 3 battle, 61-36.

Senior starter Levi Hendrickson was out due to injury, while fellow senior Wyatt Rugar picked up three fouls by the 2-minute mark of the first quarter.

“Some of the younger guys are stepping up for periods at a time, then you see that inexperience come in,” said Youngsville coach Jim Kesterholt.

Rugar scored all six first quarter points for the Eagles (1-10 overall, 1-5 Region 3) before picking up his third foul and Youngsville actually went on an 8-0 run at the start of the second to take a 2-point lead, buoyed by a 3-point play from Noah Myers.

Turnovers hurt the Eagles late in the period, however, allowing Cochranton to close the half on a 11-0 run to take a 25-16 lead.

“Turnovers killed us in the second quarter,” noted Kesterholt. “That led to their 9-point lead at the half. That’s just inexperience, letting themselves be hurried up by the game instead of under control.”

Noah Bernarding and Chance Hoffman got hot in the second half for the Cardinals (7-5, 4-2), scoring a combined 24 points as the lead swelled late in the game.

Rugar finished with 13 points to lead the Eagles, while Brady Kesterholt scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half.

Bernarding led Cochranton with 19 points, while Hoffman and Zac Wigton added 14 apiece.

Cochranton also won the JV game, 62-25. Nyko Mercado and Dean Procter scored six points each for the Eagles.  Youngsville  returns to action Friday, hosting Eisenhower.

“We have a day to prepare and get ready to battle again,” said coach Kesterholt. “These guys are battling hard and that’s all you can ask for as a coach, that they come out, play hard and do to the best of their abilities what we’ve taught them to do. There’s still a lot to clean up, obviously, and keep working on and we’ll keep doing that and hopefully get some momentum going and put a win on the board.”
