Wolverines fall in home opener to Coudersport
Sheffield couldn’t have asked for a better opponent to come into town for their home opener. The Wolverines battled, but defending AML champion Coudersport was as advertised, defeating Sheffield 62-18 on Tuesday.
“They’re the defending AML champions for a reason,” said Sheffield coach Jack Rice. “I thought we competed well.”
Nine of the 10 weight classes that were wrestled ended in forfeit – including three in Sheffield’s favor.
The Wolverines; Jacob Disshen earned a third period fall over Kurt Lefever at 132, while Nick Knowles (285) and Caden Smead (106) earned first period pins.
Disshen trailed his match early, 2-0 after the first period, but came back to earn a 7-5 lead after the second and ultimately the pin in the third.
The match of the night came at 170, where Coudersport’s Isaac Wright earned a hard-fought 6-4 win over Sheffield’s Kevin Evans. The Wolverine was down 6-1 at one point, with his third period rally coming up just short.
“I thought we had a lot of positives,” Rice said. “Jake Disshen wrestled a real good match at 132, Kevin Evans at 170, as well as Nick Knowles at 285 and Caden Smead.”
Sheffield returns to action Thursday, hosting Johnsonburg.
