Eisenhower girls beat Sheffield for second time

Eisenhower's Caroline Smelko defends Sheffield's Mya Grubbs during their game on Friday.

Kirsten Baran put up 14 points, while the Lady Wolverines gave up 40 turnovers in a 56-16 Eisenhower win over visiting Sheffield on Friday.

Sheffield had 15 turnovers in the first quarter alone, attributing to the Lady Knights racking up 24 points for a big early lead.

Sheffield struggled in the first half with breaking the Eisenhower press, something Sheffield head coach Brandon Troutman attributed to not matching the Lady Knights’ intensity.

“We want to be lions and not sparrows,” said  Eisenhower head coach Mike Logue. “We want to be the aggressors. We don’t want to sit back and let things happen to us. We want to be the ones to force the action, good or bad.”

Along with leading the Lady Knights in points, Baran also pulled down nine rebounds, while Savannah McKown had five steals in a game where the Eisenhower’s defense kept the Lady Wolverines from ever getting on a roll.

Eisenhower’s Savannah McKown holds off Sheffield’s Sierra Grubbs while pulling in a pass Friday night in a 56-16 win over the Lady Wolverines.

“Kirsten Baran and Payton Mineweaser, our two captains are doing a  good job of leading us here,” said Logue. “Payton is kind of the quiet type, leads by example.”

Eisenhower returns to action in the Kane Christmas Tournament on Tuesday.
