Eagles, Knights drop Region 3 matches

NORTH EAST — Youngsville came out on the losing end of a 46-4 final score in Tuesday’s Region 3 wrestling dual at North East.

The Eagles had one win, a 13-3 major decision by Nathan Lehman over Dillon Schnars at 126 pounds.

“Nathan wrestled well in our only win of the evening,” said Youngsville coach Paul Clough. “The highlight for me was the end of the match. After a stop for blood time, we chose to give Schnars an escape with 10 seconds to go in the match to try for the major decision. Nathan came through with a takedown and added a couple back points on top.”

The Eagles had to forfeit three weight classes and four more went uncontested. Dustin Phelps, Aaron Melquist, and Austin Spear all chose to move up one class to get a match rather than take a forfeit win at their usual weight.

Youngsville returns to the mat Thursday against county rival Eisenhower.

“All the boys need to work on increasing their intensity,” Clough said. “We’re letting our opponents dictate how the match gets wrestled instead of imposing our will. This was only our second match of the season and these things should improve as their confidence goes up.”

CORRY — Eisenhower fell to Corry in a Region 3 dual match on Tuesday, 57-15.

The Knights tallied three wins, including pinfall victories by Spencer Head at 160 and Logan Jacquay at 113. Alex Barnett rounded out Ike’s winners with a decision at 182.

“It was a lopsided victory, but there were a lot more close matches than what you see in the final score,” said Eisenhower coach Kris Black. “We’re young, and the guys are making little mistakes here and there but they keep getting better. It’s going to take a little while, but it’s coming.”

The Knights return to action Thursday at Youngsville. A box score of Tuesday’s match was not available at press time.
