Eagles earn big Region 3 road win over Saegertown

Youngsville senior Brady Kesterholt poured in 21 points to lead his team to a 53-38 Region 3 win over Saegertown on Wednesday – the first of the season for the Eagles.

SAEGERTOWN – A 9-day layoff proved to be no problem for Youngsville, as they opened Region 3 play with a 53-38 road win over Saegertown on Wednesday.

Brady Kesterholt and Wyatt Rugar had big games for the Eagles (1-2 overall, 1-0 Region 3) scoring 21 and 18 points respectively, with Rugar also pulling down 10 rebounds.

“Saegertown is a tough place to go and win,” said Youngsville coach Jim Kesterholt. “We got in foul trouble early and hadn’t played in nine days.”

Rugar and fellow senior starter Levi Hendrickson got in early foul trouble, sitting close to 10 minutes each in the first half, according to coach Kesterholt. But it was another senior, Brady Kesterholt who led them to a 26-20 halftime lead, scoring 12 of his 21 points in the first half.

Also, the Eagles got some big minutes from the likes of Dasan McAvoy and Gage Hendrickson.

“The job that Dasan McAvoy and Gage Hendrickson did in the first half was phenomenal for being young kids filling in,” coach Kesterholt said. “Once we were able to have our three seniors back together in the second half, we really started to take control.”

Youngsville extended its lead to 11 by the end of the third and the Panthers (3-2, 0-1) weren’t able to get any closer.

Youngsville was also a winner in the JV contest, 33-24.

The Eagles have their home opener on Friday against Cambridge Springs, which has already beaten Warren and Eisenhower this season.

“We’ll look to keep challenging ourselves,” coach Kesterholt said. “Playing Fort LeBoeuf and Sharpsville definitely helped out tonight, helped prepare us. It’s a good feeling to be 1-0 in the league.”
