Dragons earn impressive road win over Meadville

MEADVILLE – Warren improved its dual record to 2-0 with an impressive 41-30 road victory over Meadville on Tuesday.

A hot start by the Dragons saw Blake Ristau pin Elijah Stephens and Brett Cummings earn a fall over Jacob Stephens at 160 and 172, followed by a major decision by Nick DeSimone over Thomas Pollard, to the delight of coach Dean Johnson.

“The boys did a super good job – two pins right off the bat like Blake Ristau, who took some time off,” he said. “We are working on being one of the top four teams in District 10.”

Meadville rallied, reeling off three straight pins, but the Dragons (2-0) flexed their collective muscles in the 106-126 weight classes.

Avery Smith (106) and John Fankhouser (126) both won by major decision, while Jake Fankhouser earned a tech fall at 120 and Alex Anderson a forfeit win at 113.

Jake Engstrom, fresh off a second place finish at the Southern Tier Wrestling Officials Association Tournament, pinned Isaac Unruh at 145.

“We accomplished one of our goals, pinned some kids that we didn’t think we had a chance against,” said assistant coach Paul Streich.

In junior high action, the Bulldogs topped the Dragons 27-6.

“This was a learning experience for all of us,” said coach Nate McNett. “It was our first match as a team and there are plenty of things we can work on.”

The Dragons are scheduled to host their home opener on Thursday, and it’s a big one against one of the top teams in the state – Cathedral Prep.

“I would like to have a big crowd out on Thursday,” Johnson said. “We’re wrestling one of the best teams in the state. I can’t wait to see the outcome.”
