Local hoopsters ready to tip-off college seasons

The winter season in the NCAA officially kicks off this week, and plenty of Warren County athletes are taking the court, mat and pool for their respective schools.

2016 Eisenhower graduate Mallory Trumbull will be playing for Grove City College.

Here’s a look at those local athletes who have taken their talents to the next level on the hardwood. Swimming and wrestling will be featured on Friday.

WOMEN’S

BASKETBALL

D.J. HAHN (Warren/California University of Pennsylvania): Hahn helped lead Warren to its first ever District 10 championship  in girls basketball last season and earned a scholarship with one of the top Division II programs in the country.

The Vulcans won the Division II national championship in 2014-15, are the preseason pick to win the PSAC West this season and come in with a preseason national ranking of No. 8 by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Cal U returns all but one player from last year, plus two players who missed all of last season due to injuries after being members of the 2015 NCAA National Championship team.

Senior guard Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) and junior forward Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) were both named to the preseason All-PSAC West Team

The Vulcans begin their season this weekend at the Mountain East Conference (MEC)/PSAC Conference Challenge when they face Notre Dame (Ohio) and West Liberty on Friday and Saturday in Erie.

MALLORY TRUMBULL (Eisenhower/Grove City College): The Lady Knight was phenomenal as a high school senior last season and parlayed that into an opportunity with Division III Grove City.

While their, she will team with Erin Logue, among others, who is the daughter of her high school coach, Mike Logue.

Trumbull fulfilled multiple roles during her high school career, serving as the team’s point guard for her junior and senior campaigns, versatility that should serve her well.

In the classroom, she was valedictorian of her graduating class and is majoring in Biology.

GCC opens its season Tuesday, hosting Pitt-Greensburg.

JEN ISENBERG (Sheffield/Pitt-Bradford): Unfortunately for Isenberg, she has had to endure a number of injuries in her basketball career, including missing all of last season.

When she is on the court, however, she is an impact player, and will be looking to impact the Panthers in a lot of ways this season. At 5-11, she can play both inside and outside, making her a match-up problem for AMCC foes.

UPB will be returning a pair of All-AMCC guards in junior Ali Rinfrette and senior Kassera Owens, both Bradford High graduates. They are picked to finish second in the AMCC in the preseason poll.

The Panthers open the season on Nov. 18 and 19 at the Jim Crawley Tournament in Frostburg, MD.

KRISTEN WILLIAMS: (Eisenhower/Penn State DuBois): The Lady Lions already got their season underway with a 100-57 victory over Pitt-Titusville.

Williams, who was a standout at Eisenhower, scored 14 points in the game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

EVAN SUPPA (Warren/Oberlin College): Suppa enters the fold for Yeomen after a stellar academic and athletic high school career at Warren.

Oberlin posted back-to-back double-digit win seasons for the first time in program history in 2014-15 and 2015-16, with Suppa one of several freshman who will look to continue to keep the program going in the right direction.

The Yeomen return three of their top four scorers, senior guards Jack Poyle, Nathan Cohen and Zach Meyers.

Eight different states – Ohio, California, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and New York are represented among respective players’ home towns.
