Dragons fall to Oilers

OIL CITY – Noah Petro and Jahmeer Jordan both rushed for over 100 yards in the first half to help lead Oil City to a 36-0 win over Warren in Region 5 action Friday at Oil City High School.

The Oilers improve to 2-7 overall while the loss drops Warren to 1-8. Both teams were winless in Region 5 heading into Friday’s game.

It was all Oil City from the start as Petro busted off a 75-yard run on the very first play from scrimmage. The Dragons were able to keep the game scoreless with a fumble recovery deep in their own territory, but not long after Oil City quarterback Dylin Chapin kept it himself up the middle for a one-yard touchdown run, then ran in the conversion to make it 8-0.

Chapin then doubled the lead with another rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion pass just before the end of the first quarter. Petro found the end zone from nine yards out in the second, and Chapin connected with Jordan for a 42-yard touchdown pass on the last play of the first half to make it a 29-0 Oiler advantage heading into the locker room.

Warren’s offense, which was largely kept quiet in the first half, started to string together some promising drives in the second half. The Dragons nearly scored after a Hayden Salapek fumble recovery and a 44-yard run by Austyn Cummings moved the ball deep in Oil City territory, but the Oiler defense came up with a big stop on fourth down to keep the shutout intact.

The Dragons also had a drive stopped on fourth and goal late in the game.

The final points of the night came when Oil City’s Aaron Chatley broke free down the left sideline for a long run down to Warren’s one yard line, where teammate Austin Weller was able to punch it in up the middle.

Petro finished with a game-high 162 yards on 12 carries while Jordan added 11 carries for 107 yards. Most of their damage was done in the first half as Petro racked up 143 yards and Jordan another 101 in the first 24 minutes of action. Factoring in his 42-yard touchdown reception, Jordan finished with 149 yards of total offense.

Warren was led by Cummings with 55 yards on 12 carries. Mitchell Bryant ran six times for 42 yards before leaving the game after the first half, and Marvin Bryant had 47 yards on nine touches.

The Dragons will wrap up their season next week at Bradford.

In other action on Friday, the Meadville Bulldogs stunned previously undefeated Grove City 48-14 to win the Region 5 Championship. The final standings with league play finished are Meadville (6-0 in region), Grove City (5-1), Conneaut (4-2), DuBois (3-3), Franklin (2-4), Oil City (1-5) and Warren (0-6).
