Lady Dragons best Titusville in opener

Minus one little hiccup, Warren was on point in its season-opening volleyball match against Titusville on Thursday.

The Lady Dragons dropped the second set in the Region 4 matchup, but that was it as they won 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-10, 25-18).

“We were a little streaky,” admitted Warren coach Mike Dolan. “But when we had good passing, we were effective.”

The Lady Dragons jumped out to a big lead in the first set, thanks to strong play from Megan Wortman, Lydia Latimer and Haley Nelson. In fact, they led 21-11 before Warren was able to ultimately put it away, however.

The second set featured a pair of big runs, first by Titusville. With the score tied at 13, the Lady Rockets proceeded to go on a 7-0 run to take a 20-13 lead.

Warren responded, as a pair of big kills by Nelson led a 6-0 charge of their own to cut the margin to one, 20-19. They rallied to tie the score at 23, but Titusville rattled off the next to points to even the match.

No matter, as the Lady Dragons came out with a vengeance in the third, jumping out to a commanding 19-7 advantage. Celia Chase was key in the charge, as was setter Ellie Lobdell in what was ultimately a 25-10 set.

“I thought we responded well after the second,” said Dolan. “I thought we hit the ball pretty well.”

Latimer, Chase and Wortman helped Warren continue that momentum into the fourth, jumping out to a 13-7 advantage. Titusville rallied and got as close as two, 17-15, but kills by Latimer and Wortman set up an 8-3 run to close out the match. Latimer finished with 12 kills and three aces, while Wortman (10 kills, 9 digs), Nelson (8 kills, 15 digs), Chase (8 kills, 7 digs), Haley Tuller (4 kills) and Lobdell (31 assists, 3 aces) all played key roles as well.

Warren played at the Fort LeBoeuf Tournament on Saturday, but this served as their first true match.

They also won the JV match, 25-23, 13-25, 15-8.

Alexis Nyquist (22 assists), Grace Wortman (6 kills) and Payge Sumrow (4 kills) paced the winners.

Warren hosts its JV tournament on Saturday, followed by a matchup at home against Oil City on Tuesday.
