Lady Knights drop physical battle to Cambridge Springs

In a fast and physical Region 3 battle, it was Cambridge Springs that came out on top against Eisenhower, 47-26 Thursday.

Eisenhower came out of the gates strong, jumping out to a 9-4 lead in the first quarter after an Emily McJunkin layup. That’s where the game shifted, however, as the Lady Devils went on a 21-0 run, which saw them shut out the Lady Knights in the second quarter.

“The second quarter, we really allowed them to dictate what was happening,” said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue. “We gave them 13 foul shots in the second quarter of which they made eight. We got frustrated and we allowed them to take us out of our game mentally. In my mind, that was the difference.”

It was a game that also had a little bit of everything a technical foul, not one but two 4-point plays and a frenetic sequence which ended in Eisenhower Kirsten Baran being kicked in the stomach by Cambridge’s Camryn Schmidt.

“We can be a physical team when we want to be,” Logue said. “We don’t usually back down from anybody, but sometimes we have to keep that in check. We can’t let another team take us out of our game mentally.”

In between the whistles, the Lady Devils took control.

Mackayla Kurt scored nine of her 13 points in the second quarter, including one of those 4-point plays, as the Lady Devils took a 21-9 lead into the halftime locker room.

Cambridge’s Taylor Babb, who scored all four of her points on back-to-back buckets to start the third quarter, extended the lead to 25-9. Despite not putting up a high point total, Babb controlled the Lady Devils’ offense with her lightning-quick ball-handling skills.

By the time Mallory Trumbull’s driving layup went through the net to end Ike’s scoring drought, just under 10 minutes of game time had elapsed.

The Lady Knights continued to battle, breaking out on the offensive end in the fourth thanks to Baran, Trumbull and McJunkin, but the Lady Devils had an answer in the form of Alex Miller, who came off the bench to score 11 of her game-high 15 points in the second half, including three triples.

Baran led the way for Ike offensively with nine points, while Trumbull had seven points, eight rebounds and three assists and Abby Lundmark six rebounds.

Cambridge Springs also won the junior varsity contest, 43-6. Cameran Edwards had five points for Eisenhower.

Up next for the Lady Knights is a trip to Guys Mills to face Maplewood on Monday in another Region 3 contest.

“One of the great things about it is, the next time we play Cambridge, I think we can beat them,” Logue said. “It’s that way with our region. There’s no real one or two top teams. I think from top to bottom, we’re all about equal. If you execute and play your game, you can win on the road or at home.”
