Suppa scores 21 to lead Dragons past Jamestown

OLEAN – Senior leadership is a nice thing to have in crunch time, and Warren has no shortage in that department.

The senior duo of Evan Suppa and Devin Nowacki combined to score 27 points in the second half to lift the Dragons over Jamestown, 63-57, in Sunday’s opening round of the IAABO Tournament at St. Bonaventure University.

Suppa finished with 21 points while Nowacki added 17 for the Dragons, who move on to Monday’s championship game against undefeated Olean. The Huskies opened the tournament with a 62-34 win over Bradford.

“I thought we came out of the half with a lot of energy,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “We made back-to-back threes early in the third quarter – Evan Suppa and Devin Nowacki really got us going. We had some big runs in the middle of the game that gave us an edge.”

The Red Raiders led 31-22 at the half, thanks in large part to the scoring of senior point guard Zacc Kinsey. Kinsey went on to lead all scorers with 23 points while teammate James Rojas finished with 18.

“We did a much better job keeping Kinsey away from the basket in the second half,” Berdine said. “A lot of his shots early in the game were easy looks where we didn’t rotate to help and he just went by us. The second half was a much better defensive effort.”

The Dragons outscored Jamestown 18-8 in the third quarter, a major factor being a 13-2 run with Suppa and Nowacki doing the bulk of the damage. Nowacki also grabbed seven rebounds, Ryan Skerda chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, and Noah Becker finished with seven points and seven boards.

“I thought Noah played a great game off the bench,” added Berdine. “He really did a good job rebounding the ball and had a couple big buckets late in the game.”

Tip-off for the championship game is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. at St. Bonaventure’s Reilly Center. Bradford and Jamestown will meet in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
