Sheffield hangs tough with Kane; Warren, Eisenhower fall to strong opponents

The Lady Wolverines bounced back after an opening-game loss but couldn’t complete the comeback as they fell to Kane 13-25, 25-18, 22-25 and 24-26 Tuesday at Sheffield High School.

Mya Grubbs had 11 service points, four kills and four assists in the loss for Sheffield. Julia Vile added six kills, Rachel Lemay had four kills and 10 assists, and Claire Pierson had four kills and two blocks.

“We played well at times,” said Sheffield coach Traci Vile, whose team led in both the third and fourth games. “We just need to eliminate some of the mental mistakes. We played them tough, we’re just too up and down.”

Taya Bailey had 12 service points for Sheffield’s junior varsity team in a 25-15, 25-15 sweep.

Prior to the match, the Lady Wolverines presented classmate Abbey Schmader with care packages to be donated to patients at the Warren Cancer Center and the Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital. Schmader was diagnosed in July with a rare and aggressive cancer called Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma. She began chemotherapy treatment at PCH in August.

“Every year we do a ‘pink out’ game where we donate to the Cancer Society, and this year since we had a case closer to home we decided instead of helping one cause, we’d help all of them,” Vile said. “And so we put together these care baskets to go to the Warren Cancer Center for adults and the Children’s Hospital. We’ve got enough donations for probably 30 bags – 15 of each type.”

The Lady Wolverines are back home Thursday against Elk County Catholic.

CORRY 3, WARREN 2

CORRY Warren went on the road to powerhouse Corry and nearly pulled off what would have been a very impressive victory.

Instead, they’ll settle for a 5-game loss that, nonetheless, leaves plenty of reason for optimism.

Warren won the first set 25-23, fell 23-25 in the second, 19-25 in third and rallied for a 27-25 win in the fourth, setting up some major drama.

Corry responded, however, winning 15-10.

“We had a lead late in the second game and let it get away from us, then we lost the third and could have folded but really fought for every point in the fourth, giving us a chance to get it done in the fifth, where we were right there, but lost a couple of points in a row at the end,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan.

Leading Warren were Paige Wilson (19 kills, 20 digs, 3 aces), Kaitlin Sedon (20 kills, 12 digs), Haley Nelson (17 kills, 19 digs), Megan Wortman (7 kills, 15 digs), Ellie Lobdell (54 assists, 14 digs), Kelsey Dilks (15 digs) and Haley Tuller (3 kills, 10 digs, 2 aces).

“We attacked as well as we have all year,” noted Dolan. “Our passers did a nice job staying focused and Ellie got the ball to where our hitters could take good swings and they all attacked well. Haley Nelson came up big for us.

The JV team lost, 11-25, 20-25.

Julia Lobdell (19 digs) and Celia Chase (3 kills, 4 digs) paced the Lady Dragons.

“We have three more region games and we need to keep winning,” noted Dolan, noting that the top for from the region make the playoffs.

Warren plays host to Franklin at Beaty Thursday, in the ‘Dragons 4 Abbey’ Dig Pink Fundraiser.

EISENHOWER 3, MAPLEWOOD 0

GUYS MILLS The Lady Knights fell on the road to a very strong Maplewood team 11-25, 5-25, 17-25.

Leading Eisenhower were Madi Hultman (10 digs, 1 ace, 1 assist) and Mallory Trumbull (5 digs, 2 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks, 2 assists).

“Maplewood is a really tough team, and we played better against them than we ever had,” said Eisenhower coach Ashlee Sprandle. “The first and third game we fought hard, we had our shining moments even though we didn’t win. I’m proud of how we played tonight.”

Ike lost the JV match 9-25, 7-25.

Sami Shelton (2 kills), Tess Morningstar (2 kills), Maddie Fetzeck (2 digs, 1 ace) paced Ike, which returns to action Thursday at Cambridge Springs.
