Spiked: Tough night for volleyball teams

The Lady Dragons fell to Corry, three games to one, in a Region 4 volleyball match Tuesday at Warren Area Elementary Center.

The visitors won the opening game 25-18 before Warren regrouped to take Game 2, 25-20. From there, Corry closed out the win with a 25-14 victory in the third game and a 25-17 win in the fourth.

“We had a breakdown in ball control in the third game,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan. “I thought we had a lot of momentum going into it; we played pretty well in the second game, but you’ve got to execute against a good team and we didn’t execute on all the chances we had. We gave them some free passes and they took advantage of it.”

Paige Wilson led the Lady Dragons in the loss with 19 kills and 11 digs. Kaitlin Sedon finished with seven kills, Megan Wortman had five kills and six digs, and Haley Tuller added five kills and three aces.

Warren is back in action at home against Villa Maria on Thursday.

Corry swept the junior varsity match, 25-19 and 25-15.

Celia Chase had six kills for Warren, Kelsey Dilks had three kills and five assists, and Kadee Merenick had four digs.

SAEGERTOWN?3,

EISENHOWER 1

Eisenhower’s volleyball team went toe-to-toe with Saegertown Tuesday, falling in four sets, 26-24, 8-25, 16-25, 23-25.

It’s a sign of major progress for the Lady Knights, however, according to coach Ashlee Sprandle.

“We’ve never played them to four games, so I’m happy about that, but a lot of silly mistakes,” she said. “It was a good game. Saegertown is a big school for us to beat and we’re looking forward to seeing them again.”

Emily McJunkin (5 kills, 3 blocks, 3 aces), Andrea Mortenson (5 blocks, 1 dig), Mallory Trumbull (5 digs, 2 kills, 2 blocks) and Madi Hultman (6 digs, 3 kills, 3 aces) led Eisenhower (2-1).

Saegertown also won the junior varsity match in two sets.

Youngsville ran into another District 10 power Tuesday, falling to Maplewood in three sets 10-25, 10-25, 5-25.

This loss came on the heels of Thursday’s match against Cochranton. It’s been a trial by fire with so many good opponents to open the season, but coach Bev Fox sees progress.

“We’re making big improvements and getting better each time we’re playing,” she said. “We had a lot of rallies with them (Maplewood), but it was just a mistake here and there. Keep improving that’s the goal.”

Senior Elyssa Horn led the way with 28 digs.

The JV team fell 2-0, as Maddie Uplinger had six digs.

Youngsville (0-3) returns to action Thursday when they travel to county rival Sheffield.

“Once they get that first win, I think you’ll see a change,” Fox said.

ST. MARYS Sheffield fell to one of District 9’s top teams, Elk County Catholic, by scores of 12-25, 13-25, 8-25.

No other details were provided.

Tidioute was swept by North Clarion on Tuesday, 7-25, 13-25 and 15-25.

“We’re definitely improving,” said Bulldogs’ coach Emilie Heverley. “We need to work on communication, but everything else is starting to come together.”

Nettie Durstine finished the game with three blocks, one assist, and three service points; Corrin Pastor had six assists and three service points; and Amber McAfoose had a pair of blocks and two service points.

In a three-set JV loss, Grayson Ford had three kills, one ace, two assists and two service points while Brooke Martin finished with six service points, four assists and one ace.

Tidioute hosts Forest Area on Thursday.
