Dragons win region opener; Wolverines get back in win column

CORRY – The Warren Dragons snapped a three-game losing streak with a 57-43 win over Corry in Tuesday’s Region 6 opener at Corry High School.

After a tight first half, the Dragons trailed 30-26 in the third quarter when Ryan Skerda knocked down three-consecutive shots from behind the arc to swing the momentum back in his team’s favor. Evan Suppa followed with a driving layup for two, and Warren went 12-of-15 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Warren is now 8-5 overall and 1-0 in region-play.

“Defensively, we were able to match up and play solid man-to-man,” said Dragons’ coach Jeff Berdine. “We did a good job on their ball screens to keep (Jacob) Sutton and (Jon) Haenel from scoring too much. Our goal was to limit those two and make their other guys try to beat us.”

Skerda finished the night with 15 points, Devin Nowacki had 10, Suppa nine, and Max Gross and Jacoby Passmore added eight each. Gross also chipped in 10 rebounds and three assists.

Sutton scored 12 points to lead the Beavers while teammate Bryce Xander finished with 10.

UNION CITY 50, EISENHOWER 33

Eisenhower has been missing the spark it had early in the season, and that trend continued with a 50-33 loss to Union City Tuesday at Eisenhower High School.

After starting the year 6-0, the Knights now sit at 6-5 overall and 1-3 in Region 3.

“The other night, we played together and played with intensity against a team with much more talent,” said Eisenhower coach Dave Allenson, referring last Thursday’s game at Erie First Christian Academy. “I don’t know if we thought we’d walk all over (Union City) or what, but it was just a different attitude. The games we’ve lost this year have all come down to attitude.”

Ike and Union City went back and forth early in the game before the Bears took off on a 10-0 run to start the second quarter. Playing with a healthy lead, Union City was able to run valuable time off the clock in each possession while the Knights struggled to find points on the offensive end.

Eisenhower was able to mount a brief comeback in the second half, but a four-point play by Union City’s Quentin Maynard started another run at the start of the fourth quarter that would seal the win for the Bears.

Maynard finished with 17 points to lead all scorers while Nick Miller and Lucas Dougherty added 11 and 10, respectively. Jarrett Johnson scored 11 and Jaydon Hayes 10 for the Knights.

Eisenhower faces another tough region opponent at Cambridge Springs on Wednesday.

Union City went 6-of-7 from the foul line in the final minute of Tuesday’s junior varsity game to win by a final score of 26-21. Jack Reynolds led Eisenhower with eight points in the loss.
