JOHNSONBURG - Sheffield is 1-0 after a total team effort and ferocious battle with Johnsonburg, sweeping the Rams, 25-14, 31-29 and 27-25.
"It did go back and forth in both of those (last two) games," said Sheffield coach Traci Vile, whose Lady Wolverines won just twice in 2013. "It was just an overall good team effort after four years of playing together. They really had a great attitude today."
Rachel Lemay led with 17 service points, but Brandy Rockwell and everyone at the net played well, said Vile.
"It just really was everyone contributing equally," she said.
Sheffield led 6-0 in game three and let the lead slip away before coming together again - with four seniors and one junior starting.
Lexi Lyon had eight points and Montana Sarver seven in a 25-21, 25-14 J.V. win.
WCCS 3, Erie Bethel 0
ERIE - Warren County Christian School volleyball is 3-0 after a sweep of Erie Bethel Baptist Tuesday in its New Penn Christian Conference opener.
It's defending champion WCCS' 34th straight win, but it didn't come quite as easy as most in a 25-23, 25-12, 25-9 victory.
"They (Bethel) really have come a long way as a team; their passing was excellent," said WCCS coach Monica Kerr. "We made some unforced errors, so we gave up some points we almost couldn't afford."
Caitlin McCall served for four straight points to tie game one at 22-22 and, down 23-22, Jessica Lauffenburger served for three straight points for the win.
Kate Erdman - getting varsity experience on the outside - had four points, three aces, three kills and seven digs; Allyssa Kerr 10 points, two aces, 14 kills and 12 digs; Sarah Parmenter five kills; Desirae Kerr 11 points, two aces, four kills and 24 assists at setter; Whitney Poindexter seven points and five kills, and McCall added 11 points and 13 digs.
In a 2-1 junior varsity win, Allison Weidner and Rachel Brenner had three kills each.
