George Nellis Eckland passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014 at The Wisconsin Veterans Home in Chippewa Falls.
George was on born April 19, 1937 in Barton, New York to Maude Clara and Harold Eckland. George retired from the Army in 1976 achieving the rank of Sargent First Class, receiving the following commendations and citations: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Dev, Meritorious Unit Citation, four Good Conduct Medals, Overseas Service Bar, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam, and Civil Actions Unit Citation.
George resided in Warren, Pennsylvania until 1954 when he joined the Navy. In 1959 he joined the Army being stationed around the world at various duty assignments, serving three tours in Vietnam and ending his service in El Paso, Texas. He returned to Warren in 1980 and married Linda in 1981. He and Linda cared for several foster children. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso before transferring to the University of Pittsburgh where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature in 1983. George and Linda retired to South Carolina in 1987.
George is survived and will be greatly missed by his son, Todd Rodencal; daughters, Kristy (Jeff) Goettl and ToniSue (Thomas) Duckett; and two granddaughters, Jillian Lynn Kyzer and Larue Elizabeth Duckett. He will also be missed by many other family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife Linda nee Rockwell.
Memorials can be made to Osceola United Methodist Church, 6575 Charlotte Hwy, Lancaster, SC 29720. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date in Warren, PA.
