ERIE-The Lady Dragons fell to 0-2 to start the season with a five-sets-to-none loss at the hands of defending PIAA Class AA State Champion Mercyhurst Prep Wednesday at the Pennbriar Club in Erie.
"Our girls knew exactly what we were walking into, and I'm pleased with their efforts today," said Warren coach Jeff Bartsch. "Our kids battled hard today only to be surpassed by the top team in the state."
District 10 Champion Lauren Petrella of Mercyhurst Prep defeated Warren's Alexis Vavala in Wednesday's top singles match.
"Alexis hit some great topspin shots today. She has been working on the inside out for the past week and it's starting to become a winning shot," said Bartsch.
Mercyhurst Prep's Anna Bruins - an exchange student from Germany - defeated Warren's Megan Waterfield in a long match at third singles. "There were some great exchanges and Megan's game is coming together nicely," reported assistant coach John Parroccini.
Playing in the number two singles position, senior Kim Parroccini gave a battle to Caitlyn Schultz but ultimately fell 6-0, 6-1. "Kim went out there and went for her shots today. We were especially proud of her effort," added Bartsch.
Warren's top doubles pair of Rachel Cecco and Morgan Lemmon improved from Monday's performance and gave Taylor Levinson and Nicole Freeman a battle before falling in straight sets.
In the longest match of the day, the sister team of senior Maria Miller and freshman Maribeth Miller played over 65 minutes before being defeated by the pair of Audrey Bell and Francesca Kerr. "Maria was a strong leader in the match and exploited oppponent weaknesses all day," said Parroccini.
In exhibition play, the pair of Madylyn Harding and Phoebe Nelson played two exhibition prosets and scored three games in the final. The freshman duo of Abby Buerkle and Haley Justice endured the baptism-by-fire in just their second career match.
